From the Artist's Studio to Linen: The Story Behind Our Hand-Illustrated Prints

From the Artist's Studio to Linen: The Story Behind Our Hand-Illustrated Prints

There is something deeply personal about wearing a print that began as a drawing on an artist's desk.

Before a garment is cut from linen, before a silhouette is fitted and refined, every Kimberley Anne print begins with a story. A landscape. A sound. A butterfly resting for only a moment before disappearing again.

It is here that our collections first take shape.

For our Wilderness Wardrobe chapter, Australian artist Eloise Short, worked from her studio in the Blue Mountains, to translate the Australian landscape into a series of delicate hand illustrations created exclusively for the Kimberley Anne wardrobe. Native wildflowers, soft eucalyptus leaves and graceful butterflies were drawn and painted by hand before being composed into our signature Wildflower print woven in linen.

A vintage palette of earthy browns, warm tans, faded ivory and soft sky blues captures the feeling of Australia's changing seasons—the warm afternoon light across native bushland, weathered timber cottages, wild grasses moving in the breeze and forgotten country gardens.

Each illustration is intentionally imperfect. You can still sense the artist's hand within every brushstroke, every pencil mark and every delicate floral.

Designing Prints That Tell a Story

At Kimberley Anne, we believe a textile should feel like a page from a storybook rather than simply a pattern.

Our design process starts with inspiration gathered from art, nature, music and travel. Vintage botanical books, Australian landscapes, antique textiles, old records and paintings become the beginning of a new chapter.

Once a narrative has emerged, we collaborate with talented artists—both locally in Australia and internationally—to bring that vision to life through original hand illustrations.

These artworks are carefully developed over weeks before being transformed into repeat textile designs that retain the softness and movement of the original paintings.

The finished artwork is then digitally printed onto our signature natural linen, allowing every brushstroke, colour variation and illustrated detail to remain beautifully intact.

The result is fabric that feels considered, timeless and quietly romantic.

Why We Choose Hand Illustration

All artists bring a unique point of view and hand-drawn artwork carries a warmth that cannot be replicated.

Every line reflects the rhythm of the artist's hand. Every botanical has its own subtle character.

Rather than following seasonal print trends, we create collectible textiles designed to be worn for years and treasured long after a season has passed.

Because every Kimberley Anne print is created exclusively for our collections, each chapter becomes part of the archive—a visual record of where the story began.

Natural Linen, Designed Slowly

Once the artwork is complete, it finds its final home on natural linen.

Chosen for its breathability, texture and ability to age beautifully over time, linen allows every illustrated detail to feel organic and authentic.

Combined with thoughtful pattern making and small production runs, our fabrics become part of our philosophy of designing slowly—creating garments intended to be collected, loved and worn across generations.
